Child molestation: Dirty secrets kept in families

So I just read an article posted by Madamnorie referencing an interview done by Vibe Vixen with actress KeKe Palmer. Keke mentioned that she was molested by her female cousin and her mother was also molested by a family member. As I read some of the comments on this post people said she needed counseling and should not be airing this out as a form of therapy and others felt she was making excuses for the people in her family who had molested other children within her family.

This seems to be a dirty secret kept in families as you know( I hope your read my most recent blog on victim blaming) I am no fan of grown folks molesting children. As a mental professional I noticed that sometimes when kids have been molested they molest other children not understanding that this behavior is not appropriate.

When grown folks have sexual videos or sex magazines laying around the house for children to consume they get curious in trying those images on other innocent children, completely robbing them of their care-free child hood.
Allow me to share a story with you. I was watching a TV show that mentioned how a teenage girl was molested by her pastor. Well when she went to tell other grown ups in the church and they made her apologize for what they consider spreading lies on their so called innocent pastor. Later on another child came forward to the authorities and he finally got caught.

These predators need to be brought to justice and not be given BS probation. Probation is simply not good enough. Adults should never break a child’s spirit when they come to you and address something as serious as molestation. As far as Keke goes, I think she needs intense therapy and I hope she is getting that.

According to US Education and Facts/Statistics Top of Form
Bottom of Form

“Approximately 1.8 million adolescents in the United States have been the victims of sexual assault. Research conducted by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that approximately 1 in 6 boys and 1 in 4 girls are sexually abused before the age of 18.” One million is way too many child sexual assault cases.

Best advice, know who your child is around, try to eliminate sleep overs( I’ve had to many cases reported that a child was either visiting or sleeping over a friend’s house which resulted in a child being molested by someone’s sibling or parent). Make sure you meet the parent in person, I don’t care if you have a 16 year old, and kids will tell you anything to get out of the house. Make sure you ask the parent will there be adult supervision. Don’t be afraid to explain the difference between appropriate touch vs inappropriate and start that conversation at age 4.

Lastly, make your child feel safe, let them know if anyone should do something that makes them uncomfortable, they can come to you any time(predators often convince children it’s their little secret or if they tell they will do harm to their parents), make your kids feel like you will protect them against anything.
